1. Job description

Parallel Independence Ltd is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment.

We are looking for a Full Time Support Worker to work in our Bridgwater or Taunton Home supporting young people aged 16 to 21. This full time Support Workers role involves working a rolling 2 days on 4 days off Shift pattern. Hours of work will be 9am to midnight with Sleep-In from Midnight to 7am then from 7am to 9am. The post will come with full training.

The post-holder is a Support Worker responsible to the Operations Manager for providing a professional role model for a small group of Young People working towards independence.

Working practice will always be of the highest standards and be in accordance with the National Minimum Standards, working towards Every Child Matters outcome and Company Policy. Our recruitment and selection processes relating to references are rigorous and comply with national guidance.

2. PERSONAL AIMS

a) To be an effective role model: nurturing, supportive and compassionate with the ability and willingness to challenge inappropriate behaviours and attitudes.

b) To be an effective member of the support team.

c) To maintain in a consistent manner, high quality information records and assessment documents in accordance with the Company’s recording policy and procedures.

3. AREAS OF WORK

a) Working as directed at any of Parallel Independence provisions.

b) Ensuring that the highest possible standards of physical, intellectual, emotional, social, security, safety and well-being are provided for each young person.

c) To facilitate a warm, accepting environment where the emotional, social, educational, cultural and spiritual needs of the young people can be met.

d) Ensuring that staff and children in our provisions are not subjected to or responsible for practices of a racist, sexist, discriminatory or intimidatory nature in accordance with accepted Parallel Independence policy.

e) Developing Monthly Targets for each Young Person within the provision, which reflects the requirements of their Individual Support Plan.

f) Engaging in house meetings to both assist and encourage the team in preparing and actioning support plans.

g) Dealing with conflict situations, which may arise in an effective manner.

h) Ensuring that a comprehensive hand-over is provided to the other team members at the end of each shift.

i) Providing a written assessment for each Young Person within their Support plan and encouraging the young people to contribute to daily recording and support planning meetings.

j) Sharing domestic duties that relate to the support and welfare of the children in our provisions, this includes cleaning and cooking.

k) Observing health and safety regulations as they apply to a residential setting and have the ability to assess risk as part of a team, which allows young people to develop personal/social skills and more positive behavioural responses.

l) Encouraging the Young People in our provisions to express their needs and concerns in an open manner, both individually and collectively.

m) Undertaking sleeping in duties where on an established shift pattern.

n) Participating fully in the Company training programme.

o) Participating fully in monthly staff supervision and period staff appraisal with the Manager.

p) Adopting a responsible attitude towards the use of Company vehicles, accommodation and equipment and the efficient use of telephone, gas, electricity and water services etc.

q) Advocating for young people and enabling them to advocate for themselves.

r) To work as part of a team, learning from others and sharing own knowledge.

s) Ability to understand what motivates young people.

t) Ability to organize and encourage recreational activities, both within the provision and in the community, participating and supervising effectively.

u) Ability to undertake co-keyworker’s role, assisting needs of young people, working in partnership with young people, other agencies and families.

v) To represent Parallel Independence in a positive manner, upholding our standards of professionalism at all times without compromising our values and beliefs.
