NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.

A Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist is required to join our busy Biochemistry Department. The department is located at University Hospital Crosshouse Hospital, Kilmarnock, with a satellite laboratory at Univeristy Hospital Ayr, and processes specimens for all hospitals and GP surgeries in the Ayrshire and Arran area.

Our laboratory is well equipped with modern analytical equipment – Roche Cobas 8000 platforms on both hospital sites. Computing is by the Clinisys Winpath system.

You should possess a BSc Honours Degree in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent and also a Specialist Diploma in clinical Biochemistry or equivalent experience working at specialist level in Biochemistry. Your degree must be approved by the Institute of Biomedical Science/Health Professions Council, and applicants must contact the State Registration Unit, IBMS, 12 Coldbath Square, London, EC1R 5HL (Tel 020 7713 0214) to check that their degree is approved before submitting an application.

Applications will also be considered from applicants who are currently in the process of completing a Specialist portfolio or an IBMS Certificate of Competence as part of their integrated degree course and will be eligible to apply to the HCPC for registration. Consideration may also be further extended to applicants with an IBMS approved degree that do not yet possess the HCPC registration certificate.

Candidates who have not completed an IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Biochemistry will be considered for a trainee Band 6 (AfC Annex 21 applies).
Further post-graduate study may be necessary and a Specialist BMS training portfolio completed in Biochemistry. On-the-job training will be given together with opportunity for further study up to MSc level.

Hours: 37.5 hours per week over 7 days which will include working some public holidays (including Christmas/New Year). Until suitably experienced, hours are expected to be predominantly 9am to 11pm.

The department currently operates a 24/7 shift system which will include working back shift, overnights and weekends and this will be a contractual requirement for the successful candidate when designated competent to do so.

For more information, please contact Gordon Taylor, Biochemistry Laboratory Manager, Tel 01563 827449, or Stephen Mallon, Deputy Laboratory Manager, Tel 01563 827403
