With our mission to achieve Net Zero by 2050 we are continuously looking for individuals to deliver energy security, to tackle climate change and to protect our people. Register your interest for our mission critical role if you are looking for your next career move in the next 12-18 months.

Be sure to tell us when you would be available, as we have several possible start dates.

Do you enjoy tackling technical challenges? Can you remain calm whilst working under pressure?

Join us at National Grid Electricity Transmission and you will be part of an expert team responsible for the real-time operation of the high voltage electricity transmission system across England and Wales.

You’ll work in our state-of-the-art Transmission Network Control Centre (TNCC) which operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and manages everything from routine maintenance to storms and wildfires across all of England and Wales. The ‘network’ consists of over 14,000km of circuit (400kV and 275kV), nearly 800 supergrid transformers and 340 substations.

Playing a pivotal role in ensuring that the network is managed effectively and supporting delivery of planned work, you will implement the system outage plan, respond to site alarms, and facilitate critical maintenance of our assets as well as provide operational assistance in the management of planned and unplanned power system events.

We provide a bespoke training programme utilising a realistic simulation of the entire Transmission System, giving you the confidence and support needed to carry out this critical role.

About You

If you have a background in Power Systems Engineering, Electricity or Physics we want to hear from you. You will need to have a Level 3 qualification as a minimum.

Ideally you will be educated to HNC (or equivalent) level in a subject related to the role or have equivalent industry experience.

You will have the ability to work in a process orientated environment ensuring we carry out our role with a fierce focus on safety. You’ll have good logical, analytical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks and be organised.

A team player, with the ability to motivate, encourage and work with other control room personnel, you'll join a team of around 70.

What's in it for you?

Operator roles offer a competitive salary up to £46,456 dependant on capability, plus a 10.4% shift allowance on top of base salary. This role requires you to work on a shift rota pattern (hours between 7am to 7pm and currently 1 weekend in 4) published well in advance to allow for work-life balance.

Joining as an operator there are clear progression opportunities to advance to higher levels as you enhance your knowledge over time, significantly increasing your salary up to £70,000 when you have completed all your authorisations and training. These roles also attract shift pay up to 26% as they include nights shifts and weekends.

You’ll have 26 days annual leave + the option to buy or sell holiday days, things such as 26 weeks fully paid parental or adoption leave, and back-up care service are standard.

Our generous double-matched pension contribution scheme means your pension could be worth up to 18% of your salary and you’ll have the option to purchase discounted National Grid shares.

On top of all of this we offer financial support for study and we are committed to your career development.
