Our Mission

We’re not your average benefits platform – we’re the driving force that uplifts people’s lives. Our technology connects the entire benefits ecosystem, creating better outcomes for employers, employees, brokers, and providers.

Our mission is clear: to build a world where everything works at its best, ensuring every employee gets the support they need to thriveβ€”both at work and beyond.

Your Mission

As our Software Engineer (Data), you’ll build and run the pipelines, orchestration, and infrastructure that move data across Ben: in from our product and the tools we use, in from our customers, and back out to them again. It’s the plumbing the whole company and our customers depend on, and it has to stay reliable. We serve global enterprise customers with strict security and reliability requirements.

You’ll own real work from day one. You’ll have a strong team of cross functional engineers alongside you, room to grow into harder problems, and the freedom to do the job your way.

What you’ll be working on

  • Own everything that flows into Ben: build and maintain the ingestion pipelines that bring data into our warehouse, with Fivetran for managed sources and custom pipelines where we need them.

  • Keep everything running on time: own the orchestration that keeps data moving on schedule and recovers cleanly when something breaks.

  • Scale and manage our data infrastructure: build and manage our data infrastructure as code with Terraform, using mainly AWS services.

  • Connect Ben to every system our customers run: build enterprise-grade pipelines and connectors for our customers, bringing their data in, for example from HR and payroll systems, and getting accurate data back out to them, reliably and securely, even at the volumes large customers bring.

  • Build the data layer our agents act on: help connect our data to the AI agents and services we're building, including through MCP connectors, so they get the right context at the right time.

  • Shape what we build: work with product and other stakeholders to scope problems and agree on simple but scalable solutions.

  • Build it to enterprise standard: build to current security practice, for example the OWASP Top 10 and the AWS Well-Architected Framework.

Behind the scenes

Ben runs on Python 3, Django, PostgreSQL, and React, on AWS.

Our data platform today is built around Fivetran, AWS DMS or custom pipelines for ingestion, dbt for transformation, PostgreSQL on AWS RDS as the warehouse, and n8n or AWS Lambda for automation between systems. We manage our infrastructure as code with Terraform and use different AWS services depending on requirements.

We have adopted frontier level agentic development practices and continue to push the envelope of what’s possible with current technologies.

Your skills and experience

  • Strong experience with Python and SQL.

  • A few years building and running production data pipelines that other people relied on.

  • Comfortable with infrastructure as code, ideally Terraform, and hands-on with AWS, for example Lambda, ECS, Glue, S3, RDS.

  • A good grasp of ETL/ELT and orchestration.

  • Experience building or running data integrations and connectors, especially ones that other companies or customers depend on, is a real plus.

  • Solid software engineering fundamentals: clean code, sensible design, and tests you can rely on.

  • You keep security in mind when you build applications and configure infrastructure, and you know what enterprise customers expect of their data.

Nice to have, not essential:

  • Experience working on customer-facing data integrations such as HRIS or payroll feeds via SFTP and in EDI format

  • Experience with MCP server development, or different ways of preparing data for AI agents such as ontology modelling, context, knowledge graphs, and semantic layers.

We don't expect all of it. We do expect curiosity about it.

Why join us?

Ben's customers are large enterprise employers, and the hundreds of thousands of people who work for them rely on us to get their benefits right, every time. That depends on data moving accurately between their systems and ours, every cycle. You get to work on the data infrastructure that makes this run like clockwork.

At the same time, Ben is an AI-native organisation. Agents are already doing a lot of impactful work here, and they can only do it on data they can trust. That raises questions a dashboard never had to answer. How fresh does this need to be for an agent to act on it? How do you match the same entity across tools? How do you control what an agent is allowed to see? Very few engineers have answered those in production. You'd be one of them.

You'll take ownership of large, complex problem spaces, help design how they scale, and build an agentic layer few engineers have built anywhere yet, and you'll see the impact of it: Ben supports hundreds of thousands of people across 30+ countries.

It's important to us to practise what we preach when it comes to benefits. We know what good looks like and we want to provide the best for our team, with a comprehensive and inclusive benefits package. You'll have a choice over the things that are most important to you.
